A Call to Purpose
We live in a threshold moment –– a time when the long arc of consequence
has finally arrived. In its wake, we inherit a landscape gutted by economic
meltdown, terror and global warming –– the last dying breaths of the old destructive ways.
Between hope and despair, a gap appears. This is a void that cries out for vision fueled by intuitive and creative individuals. Without imagination and bold new ideas, real change cannot occur. Confusion will reign. Fear and uncertainty will rush in to claim our lives.
A flourishing Art scene becomes –– not just a noble ideal –– but a matter of survival.
We, the artists, have a heritage of gods in our family. Historically, we challenge the old and inspire the new; we open hearts and minds, raise expectations regarding the quality of life, and render the extraordinary possibilities of being alive.
And with this comes the recognition and value of ALL artists in all fields –– celebrities or those slaving away in anonymity –- for the work they continue to do and their importance to society.
Time and again, one individual’s creation in some tiny unheated garret eventually went on to fill the world with light.
This torch must be carried forward. Despite financial, emotional and spiritual hardships, we, the artists, must find a way to keep our heads above water and still help navigate our publics to higher ground.
Informed by interviews and an ongoing dialogue (spanning decades), I have attempted to articulate the frustrations, hopes and beliefs that unite us. To this end, I invite fellow creators from all over the world, from every artistic medium and culture to share in this call to purpose.
